Computer Codebreaking

Keeping secrets is a big part of life, passwords, bank details, etc… but have you ever thought about how they are keep secret?

Throughout history people have been coming up with new and ingenious ways to keep their information secret, but as technology develops it gets harder and harder.

As part of this workshop students learn about how this was done throughout history, how it is done now and make their own computer program to help them break codes.

In this workshop students decide who is considered for a job and who is not based on their digital footprints and learn about how what they post could impact them in the future.

Computers are wonderful machines, they can perform so many different tasks, so fast, all at once, but how?

In this workshop students learn about how computers work and how their programming dictates what they can and can’t do. They will learn this by building their own simple program that can; act as a quiz, perform calculations for them, draw any shape they like or even make a simple game, it’s your choice.

Stargazing & Storytelling

The night sky has fascinated the human race for centuries. We know this because we still tell stories about the stars and constellations from hundreds, if not thousands of years ago.

During this workshop students use stargazing apps to look up at the night sky and learn about these stories and how some constellations became more famous than others.

Afterwards students are encouraged to create their own unique stories about these starry shapes to help them remember them.

Predicting Projectiles

Science is the study of the world around us and through it we have learnt how much of the world works.

How have we managed this? Through experimentation and testing.

This workshop looks at how this is done in the modern world using computers. Students work in Scratch to make a simulator that can predict how far a projectile might travel given a certain set of variables. They then conduct the experiment and compare the results.

Interactive Short Storytelling

Telling stories is as old as time, it is how we used to pass information on to the next generation. Since then, it has become a form of escapism, a way to entertain ourselves with colourful characters and gripping plots.

How can technology help make this better?

In this workshops student collaboratively come up with a storyboard, together they conceive a vague plot, characters and even set pieces to include. After the brainstorming students get the opportunity to bring their story to life with creative writing, images and a little bit of HTML thrown in for good measure.

Microbit Experiments

The world around us is a fascinating place and for centuries we have used experimentation to learn more and more about it. As part of this workshop we will look at how to program Microbits to conduct experiments.

The workshop focuses on the basics of programming, the scientific method, planning and conducting experiments and encourages students to devise their own experiments to answer the burning questions that they have about the world around them.
